Tulsa Opera to Perform “Mooch the Messy” in Catoosa Schools
Tulsa Opera will be performing Marcus DeLoach’s “Mooch the Messy” for students in Springdale tomorrow. The troupe will perform at Cherokee Elementary at 9:00 a.m. and J.W. Sam Elementary at 1:00 p.m. “Mooch the Messy” is a short, 30-minute children’s opera based on the 1976 children’s book by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat.
Student have been participating in different lessons that pertain to the opera leading up to the performance. The show will also feature each school’s music teacher or principal in a short, but pivotal, role.
Each season, Tulsa Opera invites four to six promising young professional artists to participate in the Studio Artist Program. Selected through national auditions, studio artists are just starting their careers in the world of opera and gain professional experience by working directly with Tulsa Opera. This year’s performers include Zac Engle, tenor, a native of Ponca City, OK and graduate of Oklahoma State University and The Boston Conservatory, Alexander Elliott, baritone, a native of Florence, SC and graduate of Florida State University, and Whitney Hollis, piano, who joins Opera on Tour! as this season’s tour manager and pianist. She is a graduate of The University of Indiana. The studio artists participate in all Tulsa Opera education and outreach programs like the ones in Springfield.
Each year, the Tulsa Opera reaches more than 30,000 students in more than 80 schools throughout Oklahoma and nearby states. The opera was originally founded in 1948 and provides high quality, locally produced operas to Tulsa home owners.
