Oklahoma Cracking Down on Uninsured Drivers in Tulsa Area
If you’re a Tulsa home owner who is driving around without insurance, be advised. The State of Oklahoma is cracking down on uninsured drivers in the Tulsa area, and the penalties could be costly. Together, the Oklahoma Insurance Department (OID) and the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office have combined forces to address Oklahoma’s uninsured driver problem. Officials say that law enforcement officers from both agencies will operate driver safety checkpoints around the Tulsa area to catch drivers who are operating their vehicles without proper insurance.
Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak adds, “Our Anti-Fraud Unit is excited to work with the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office and continue our efforts to reduce the number of uninsured drivers on Oklahoma roadways. One out of every four drivers in Oklahoma does not have the minimum liability coverage that’s required by state law. That is one reason we have some of the highest auto insurance rates in the country.”
The first safety checkpoint recently took place on November 17th from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Deputies pulled over every drive coming off Highway 44 onto West Skelly and checked for his or her insurance. Those who couldn’t furnish proof of insurance were hit with a fine of up to $250, and those with zero insurance on their cars saw their vehicles towed away. Within the first hour, at least a dozen cars were impounded.
Doak notes, “That’s one of the issues, folks think that the ticket… it’s less expensive to gamble and not carry insurance and go ahead and pay a ticket. So we are trying to increase those fines for people who are driving without insurance.” The OID is also working with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol to combat the issue. On Thanksgiving, Commissioner Doak and several members of the Anti-Fraud Unit conducted ride-alongs with OHP troopers.
