3 Tulsa Students Honored As School Safety Patrollers Of The Year

- B.J. Lambert – Park Elementary School / Tulsa Public Schools
- Freedom Abernathy – Briarglen Elementary School / Union Public Schools
According to AAA, the ambassadors of traffic safety are school-aged crossing guards who play a crucial role in keeping students safe as they walk to and from school each day. Chuck Mai, spokesman for AAA Oklahoma, said, ”These school students and adults have thankless jobs that start early in the morning, in a wide variety of weather conditions that only Oklahoma can bring. We salute them for their tireless efforts.”
Parents and teachers submitted the nominations for the awards. Mai went on to say, ”Our Safety Patrol members are carrying the torch of responsibility into the schools and teaching other students the valuable and life-saving principles we all know as traffic safety.”
AAA established the School Safety Patrollers Program back in 1920 and now has active patrol units in more than 250 schools across Oklahoma. At least 30 other countries, including New Zealand, the Netherlands, England, Germany and France, have emulated the program.
The Patrol Member Pledge says, “I promise to do my best to:”
- Report for duty on time.
- Perform my duties faithfully.
- Strive to prevent crashes, always setting a good example myself.
- Obey my teachers and officers of the patrol.
- Report dangerous student practices
